While we’re all pretty much over Corona Virus, staying and keeping others healthy is still really important, so what do you do once you’ve beaten to death everything on Hulu, Netflix, and Spotify? Getting sober is hard, but it doesn’t mean being bored or lonely. Here are some awesome things to try while stuck at home.
Live Music
No matter what kind of music you love - from Diplo to Dave Matthews - there are live streams everywhere of your favorite performers.
The best resource we’ve found is SongKick, which has a running list of all live stream concerts happening throughout the month. Most of these shows are free or low-cost but YANA has some free tickets available for our members...hint, hint...another reason to join.
Yoga There are too many free or low-cost options to name them all, so we want to give a special shoutout to Yoga with Adriene. With nearly 8M YouTube subscribers, this will give a challenge to the serious practitioner and the building blocks for beginners (this guy, right here ☝️.)
With more than enough free content, Adriene will have you feeling peaceful, limber, and sweaty in no time.
Our other favorite is Yogi Kait, who is also a friend of YANA. She offers amazing videos, Yoga retreats, and if you really love it, paid subscriptions for content and more.
Meditation Our go-to resource for meditation is Jason Stephenson. With shoutouts from celebrities, entrepreneurs, and athletes, Jason is the real deal and offers meditation live streams on YouTube every day. For over 15 years, Jason has studied the positive effects of guided meditation and relaxation music. His YouTube Meditation Sleep Music Channel has grown to over 1 million subscribers, with over 250 million views.
Not your cup of tea? No worries, there are hundreds of guided meditations available online for free. Learning to quiet the mind is an amazing and valuable skill, but it does take practice!
Movies
We’re not talking about watching the same movie over and over again by yourself but joining a watch party online with others. YANA will begin hosting Netflix Watch Parties on Saturday nights where our community votes on what to watch. All you have to do is click a link and join!
If you can’t make it or are interested in seeing something else, our favorite Austin theatre, Alamo Drafthouse has launched Virtual Cinemas that offer in theatre movies to watch at home.
Recovery Meetings
If you can’t tell by now, YANA believes that there are good meetings and well, not so good meetings. A good meeting is one that is based in the literature Basic text of AA & NA) and 100% focused on recovery. If you just need to talk, YANA can help with that too, but in a meeting we want it to be about what it was like (not war stories), what happened, and what it is like now.
It’s easy to join an awesome meeting with YANA, but some of our favorite groups are the Pacific Group in Los Angeles, Northland in Austin, and The Outpost in Ingram.
Exercise
The three pillars of recovery are unity, service, and recovery or if you prefer, mind, body, and spirit. The gyms may be closed but there is still plenty of space to keep fit at home. One of our favorites and a great way to start the day is the Wake-Up Workout from Instructor Live. It’s a nice gentle way to get you set for the day that utilizes all the muscles in the body.
Getting sober is hard, but it doesn’t mean being bored or lonely. We are everywhere - the people that make your coffee, care for your children, and fix your car. We are your family, coworkers, friends, and more.
One of the reasons we built YANA was to make finding sober people and events easier, especially in a world where more and more connection is done online. From music to GOOD meetings, we help you stay in a program of action.
As the world continues to recover from the fallout of COVID-19 our hope is that we can begin organizing events in cities everywhere - from Austin City Limits to Sasquatch Festival - from Burning Man to Longhorns Football. Through our combined experience we know that ANY event can be sober if you want it to be and YANA is going to make that easier than ever.
